I have been having some very very very bad days at the moment and have been in no mood for anything (plus I haven't found my camera charger yet so my camera is DEAD) but have had some good things happen. I entered a little competition for Pigeonhole vintage and managed to get into the top 10 and the top 10 then got to do a fashion shoot (photos still to come) in some grate Pigeonhole clothing that was completely amazing to be a part of.

The photo above was taken by a friend at her party a few weeks ago that I had to show it to you and my blue shoes that I'm wearing I wore for the shoot and loved them so much I bought them then and there (they are an old pair of bowling shoes that are the coolest).

I live in Perth, West Australia so it's winter at the moment. It feels very cold because of the strong cold wind from the sea (10-20C during the day, that will make anybody in the hemisphere laugh) but we get a lot of sun during day so you can get away with less layers but at night you need to rug up because it can get down to 5C. I love the winter time because I can wear all my lovely winter coats and cardigans but reading all the blogs from the northern hemisphere has me hankering for the heat and sun.

This afternoon my mum and I went to the Astor cinema for the Revelation Perth International Film Festival to see We Are The Mods. It was a very cool movie about a girl who becomes a mod after making friends with a new girl in her photography class, a good American coming of age story. I loved all the clothes, music and scooters. I had to rug up because it is very cold and wet in Perth at the moment but wish I had taken a coat with me to ward away the rain.

Yesterday my brother and I took our Mum out for lunch for her birthday. I was luckily in Mt Lawley on the right day because there was a vintage clothing market at the Flying Scotsman. It was packed full of vintage clothing and even more people. I bought a wool checked circle skirt for $15 (that needs to be taken up), a nice 50's day dress decorated with blue roses for $20 and 2 cotton 50's sundresses each $20, one with gray flowers and pink flowers and the other a madras check in pink and brown. My mum got some fabric to make a dress and trousers with and a nice 60's styled cocktail dress and my brother got a Motorhead record.

Remember this? Well I have finally got around to sewing them to my size today. This weekend is Foundation day long weekend (and i have put my sewing room in some sort of order) that I felt like doing some sewing.

I first took the side in by an inch decreasing as I went down the leg to get rid of the hip/saddle bag
My Janome sewing machine that was my Grandmas and that I learnt to sew on when I was at primary school and it still works brilliantly

I then slimmed down the leg into a straight leg by a centimeter every time until it fit properly

I had to take a lot off the sides to take it down from a size 12 to a size 8 (sorry about my very dirty bathroom mirror)

End result (not hemmed yet)

This afternoon my boyfriend and I went to see a model train show that was very interesting. I have always liked trains and my boyfriend was in a model train club in high school (geek! ha ha) so we went to check it out. There were so many models of all different makes and sizes but they had a fantastic Lego set up that was drawing the most peoples attention. On the way home I stopped in at Alannah Hill because they where having a sale (30-50% off) and bought some purple spotty tights and a new red cardigan for winter.

Last night I did my first bump and grind class with Miss Jane from Sugar Blue Burlesque and loved it so much (but my bum is still hurting from moving muscles that I haven't used in a long time). It was such a fun but I felt a little over dressed. I took the safe option of a t shirt and leggings but felt very overdressed, short and sweet was definitely the way to go.
I normally wear pants or a pencil/a-line skirt with a cool top when I do lindy classes but I think I will get a bit adventurous in what I will wear. Next times class is military themed so I will have to find something gorgeous to wear. Soldier or Sailor?

Yesterday was my 24th birthday so I took the today off from work and to celebrate my boyfriend and I went and had high tea at The Duxton Hotel in Perth. It was very special because there was only us in the restaurant area but they had the most fantastic food for us to eat and by the end of it we where fully stuffed with food. On the walk back to the car we stopped in for a drink at a very small bar whisky bar (very hidden bar) called Helvetica before going home. We dressed up for the occasion and got some very funny looks from the office workers on there way home (I think some of them thought that we where a little odd or that we where guest going to a wedding) but I just had to take my new hat out for a spin.

Yesterday my boyfriend and I went to Fremantle for a nice relaxing afternoon at the pub (his choice) and lots of cool vintage shops (my choice) to find myself a nice pre-birthday present for my self and to get some dutch breakfast cake (its a tradition to have one at my birthday). I got myself a 50's souvenir scarf from Edinburgh to add to my collection and an 80's dress (that needs a little adjusting to fit better) with a pattern of little red birds on a black background.

On Tuesday I had to do some overtime so yesterday I decided to use that overtime and leave early and managed to swing past a realy good op-shop on my way home. I was so happy that I did because I fond some real gems.

A vintage looking knit top with realy nice detailing for $5, I'm going to change the buttons on the collar to make them stand out

Tweed pants that are a size 12 for $5.50 and are perfect for being cut smaller (I'm only a size 6 to 8) to make a very cool looking pair in a vintage trousers

Another pair of tweed pants in a size 14 for $6 to be made into new trousers

A full china tea cup, saucer and side plate for $3.50! I love the rose pattern on it and I didn't have a full set.

This afternoon my Boyfriend and I went to spend the afternoon with his Grandma to watch the AFL game on TV with her (I know nothing about the game and just make vague comments about it so to look interested but I do like going to see his Grandma and talk about all kinds of cool things from when she was back in England during the 40's). I took my newly knitted cardigan ,that I blogged about starting a while ago, out for a spin seeing that Perth is getting cooler during the day. I used one of my trusty 40's vintage pattens to knit it and added a peter pan collar to make it different (the collar isn't tacked down completely yet) adding button accents because I used press studs to hold it together. After we left my Boyfriend's Grandmas house we went shopping and I bought more wool to start on a new knitting project that I haven't decided what pattern to use yet.

40's Turban

Remember this photo from last Saturday? A turban is a really easy way to get a 40's home front look in no time and the least amount of effort. The turban, like the snood, are iconic peaces of WWII head wear that where an everyday practical way of keeping back your hair while they worked (I have a photo of a grate grate aunt in the 40's wearing one) but seeing that rationing meant the ordinary woman couldn't have hats it was cheep, only needing a large peace of fabric or (as bellow) knitted and accessorized with anything at hand if a more dressy look was wanted.

I pin curled this side loosely with flat pin curls and the back in raised pin curls. It came out too big and booffy but I brushed it out and hid the result with flowered hair clips

I did finger waves on this side that didn't go so well but it does give a good balance to the other side

Hullabaloo (the Perth lindy exchange) is being held over the ANZAC long weekend and has caused a problem for me, this is the first year that I have had short hair, so how can I do an authentic 30/40/50's style? I naturally have very straight hair and has always wanted it to be curled. I started curling my hair with hot rollers when I was 11, then went on to soft and hard rollers and now I have been pin curling my hair for 5 years. These are how I normally do my hair:

This 50's style is done by a pin curl wet set for just under 24hrs (yes my hair is very, very stubborn to stay curled) then brushed out and defined with gel to keep the top smooth and to keep the wave at the front smooth

This is done with soft rollers set with salt spray on dirty hair for dancing. For swing dancing hair styles it is easy to keep it simple so that you don't get upset when your lead sweeps his hand over your head when turning you and knocks your do off. And the golden rule, If it looks unbalanced or not quite right pin a flower to hide it

Hats are the easiest way to get a good vintage look because all you have to do is tie your hair into a pony tail or bun and plop a hat on only needing to be concern with how the front looks. To fake long hair at the back I have used a snood but have found them too heavy to dance in, I much prefer a light hairnet pined nicely in place with pretty clips

This is a pin curl re-set with a simple large pin curl at each side with a flower in each. When dancing at an exchange it is hard to do classes during the day and have a perfect authentic looking hair style at night so it is easier to set your hair on one day and re-do it the next day by keeping it under a scarf in class

This was done professionally using hot rollers and lots of hairspray to set it. If I do victory rolls myself I ether use a rat or wet the hair with hairspray and pin it up to dry so it sets hard. This is the one thing I miss about not having long hair.

This long weekend I will try some styles (including finger waves that I have never been able to master). Wish me luck

So these are 5 facts about myself:

1. I have pattern dyslexia (this explains to all my little grammatical spelling errors that slip through my spell check) which I was diagnosed when I was 8. I have learned to live with it and read for at least an hour a day to keep up my reading age. If any of you don't know what dyslexia is you can read about it hear

2. I only just got my drivers license last December and am now on my P plates for 2 years....... YAY! more restrictions

3. I love Australian Vogue and buy it every month even though I will never be able to buy any of the stuff I like in it (except if i nab a millionaire or win the lotto)

4. I have been dancing since I was 2. I started off in ballroom and then moved into ethnic dancing, then to contemporary interpretive and have now been dancing lindy hop for 5 years now

5. I love the ocean but am a crap swimmer so will never go in pass my hips unless it is completely flat with no waves and I have a panic attack if it is too deep or rough (I have nearly choked my boyfriend because he tried to pull me under a wave and he ended up with scratches that lasted for a week)

Last Friday night I cut my hair short. I was getting so annoyed with always having it up and never doing anything with it that I had 5 inches cut off it. I love it! Mod was one of the first vintage styles that I adopted. I got into it just before high school and was heavenly influenced by my mum ( she was a mod in the 80's revival and still had some of her clothes) and it was quite easy to get 60's and 80's mod clothing in the op-shops. I still have a soft spot for it now and even more since my boyfriend got his vespa.

My roots are starting to show at the top of my head and I have been thinking of re-colouring my hair. I'm a natural blond but have been dying my hair since I was 8. I usually go for shades of red but lately I have been going for dark brown, but I have always had a soft spot for platinum blond, but my blond is more a dirty dark blond and I hate it. I also have had problems with professionals dying my hair. I can do my own normally very well but the last time I got a professional to do it and ended up with flame red roots and dark purple hair and had to spend nearly $200 to fix it (it took 3hrs of stripping the colour out and then having a million dark colours to cover what didn't come out) so I am scared that I will end up with no hair if I get it bleached. a blond I think I could live with

We set off on Friday morning to go down south for the long weekend holiday. It was hot! I have never been down south in such hot weather. We stayed in a little chalet just outside of Dunsborough in made with straw bales instead of brick with the coolest bathroom I have ever seen and a cute little patio with a fish pond (with a big fish that splashed around). After settling in we went to the beach for a swim to cool off and had a light dinner in Dunsborough.

On Saturday morning my boyfriend went for a surf while I caught up with my knitting before venturing out. We went to Dunsborough to fill up on petrol and have a peace of the best chocolate mud cake I have ever tasted before working around the church fete in the town center where I bought a new teacup for $10 (photos still to come) and then headed off to all our favorite winery's. We started out at the Margaret River Chocolate Factory where we found a lovely statue off a cow which part of a whole south west insulation. After that we went to Provadore that has fantastic gourmet produce. We then went to Hay Shed winery for lunch and went for a refreshing drink at Bootleg Brewery before heading off to the beach again to cool off and finished off the day with fish and chips.

On Sunday we started the day of by going to Olio Bellow to taste some grate olive products and I got a jar of there kaffir lime infused marinated feta that I can not weight to crack open. We then went to Margaret River to have some coffee and a snack before making our way to Augusta to see the Cape Leeuwin lighthouse and luckily got to Augusta when they had there river festival and had a nice walk through the open air market. In the evening we met up with a friend who lives in Margaret River for a good pub dinner.

I was very sick on Sunday night (no, not from alcohol) and was still feeling bad this morning from lack of sleep so I didn't feel like doing an outfit photo when feeling so sick (I'm feeling a little better now but it will take me a while to get over it)

Today my boyfriend decided to take me sailing on the Sawn River on the catamarans that you can higher. His description of it was of a lazy meander from one side to the other in nice calm seas. What we got was a very fast wind and spent a lot of the time speeding up and down. Within 10 minutes I was soaked to the skin and regretting the decision to not wear a life jacket (I love water and being in it but I am a very bad swimmer and have panic attacks in water that I can't touch the bottom in) but by the end I started to enjoy it. But next time I will remember to wear my bathers (and a life jacket).

Tavi at Style Rookie (a fantastic example of the way I use to dress when I was in primary school)

A few weeks ago a funny thing happened. My brother was sent on a TAFE course for computer stuff, one of the other students that was on the course he thought looked familiar! It turned out that she was one of my high school friends that I haven't seen since I left and now on Saturday are going to her birthday to reconnect. This is very common in Perth that you know someone, who knows someone, who knows you but it started me thinking about my friends I left behind as I have grown up.

I went to a Very! Very! Very! Hippie primary school where there everyone knew everyone and you stayed with the same kids as you went through. But when we all went off to different high schools (apart from one friend who went to the same high school as me) we all lost touch. Sometimes I would bang into them, but now it is less and less. So tonight I have reconnected through Facebook to find my old primary school alumni.

The biggest latte I have ever seen

Eating a good breakfast of eggs benedict and catching up on the Alexander McQueen news

Today was a very busy day. I started off having to go to my estate agent to pay a water bill which gave me the perfect opportunity to have some breakfast at a very nice cafe around the corner. Just Restaurant Bar in Como is a very cute tapas bar that I got use to when I lived up the road from it. I love going for breakfast and find it very funny that they serve alcoholic cocktails with it (they use to have tequila sunrises but have changed now to bloody marys and bellinis). After I went to Perth to do some shopping and got some bargains.

Yesterday I organized my wool into a better storage container than multiple bags. I put them all into a nice old suitcase and fond so many colours I didn't know I still had I started straight away at knitting a new cardigan in a fair isle design. I love traditional Scottish knitting techniques but I always end up with knotted up wool. Unfortunately after all my tidying up I went into my pan tree and found another basket full of wool in it.

Today has been nice and cool and was a perfect opportunity to wear my warmer clothing and my new cardigan that I bought a few weeks ago in the sales. My boyfriend and I went to Perth for lunch in Kings St at a relay nice wine bar (that I always forget the name too) because he won some money in the lottery and decided to have a treat. The lunch was so nice and now I am so full that I won't need any dinner.

Today I went to the retro market at the Burlesque Lounge in Northbridge run by Sugar Blue Burlesque and came across these fantastic bargains. I found 50's ceramic ducks for my wall which I have been on the look out for, for years (I have 3 tattooed on my back).

Today my boyfriend and I went to Perth Zoo for the first time in 8 years (even though for over 2 years I have lived only a 10 min drive from it) something that I have been meaning to do for ages but have never got around to it.It was 31C so a lot of the animals where asleep due to the heat but I got to see the penguins and the otters that are my favorite animals there.

I have just come back from having a grate Indian curry dinner in Vic Park at my boyfriends favorite Indian restaurant. My hair is quite flat because I rode on the back of his Vespa to dinner which I love to do and for the first time in a skirt not shorts or pants was a new experience.

Yesterday was Australia Day so I didn't have to work. Yesterday I went to see the new movie Nine with my mum seeing that my other half would have slit his own wrists to not see it and I have to say I liked it. My favorite heroine in it was Marion Cotillard as Luisa Contini. I loved her portrayal of Guido Contini's long suffering wife especially her angry striptease to the song "take it all".
